It's been a very lively year so far. Some quick highlights:
Concert with Tom Harrell in January. I almost feel silly bragging about this five months later, but I was so excited to get to play with one of my great musical heroes.
Maiden voyage of the Tokyo Big Band in February. Led by pianist/composer/arranger/conductor/humorist/all-around amazing guy Jonathan Katz, a list of the band's members reads like a "who's who" of jazz in Tokyo. We debuted on Valentine's day, and played again at B Flat in Akasaka in May. Next appearance there in July. Great players, great charts, great fun. This is definitely a band to hear!
Tour with Chihiro Yamanaka in February. We did Osaka, Fukuoka and ended at JZ Brat in Shibuya. Always exciting to play with this trio (and a great challenge!).
Tour in April/May with Asako Toki, a singer of refined elegance and simple beauty. Nagoya, Fukuoka, Osaka, and last date at Cotton Club in Tokyo. Wonderful band- guitarist Haru playing all the arrangements- chords, melodies, solos, keyboard parts, all with just five fingers. How does he do it? And a true musical phenomenon, multiphasic percussionist Gennoshin. We had a ball on and off the bandstand.
Window Trio News
The Window Trio will be hitting the road again this September for our third annual Autumn Japan Tour. This time we will be joined by a fabulous young singer from New York (presently residing in Los Angeles) named Melissa Morgan. She came to Japan last year with the Concord Fujitsu Jazz Tour. An old friend of Brian Floody's, she will join us as we make some familiar stops and hit some new territory as well- Shikoku and Hiroshima. More news to come soon!
