"Why you always . . ."

from the CD Window by Tomoya Hara & Mark Tourian
(Panormo Music, 2004)

You won't find the typical twelve bar progression here, but this tune is nothing if not a blues. The lyrics are in the long-held blues tradition of the laments of an abused lover:

Why you always act so mean to me?
Can't be nice to just agree with me.
When will you make some kinda peace with me?
Messin', mussin', stallin', rushin', yellin', cussin', fightin', fussin'
Why you always be so goddarn mean to me?

And why you always treat me so untruthfully?
Never let me find out what the truth may be.
Why you always put some special moves on me?
Lying, shifting, stealing, lifting, cheating, drifting, Oh
Why you always treat me so untruthfully?

Why you always treat me so unfaithfully?
When I'm gone you never wait for me.
Seems like some sadistic hate for me.
Playin', flirtin', teasin', hurtin', closin' curtains, trouble certain
Why do you always treat me so unfaithfully?

Why you got to be low down and cruel to me?
Never miss a chance to make a fool of me
Always tryin' to find the very worst in me
Cuttin', raggin', pullin', draggin',
Why you got to be low down and cruel to me?

I decided against singing the melody for the recording and let my bow take the honors. Tomoya also takes us "down home" with a very gutsy guitar solo.
